Few players at Chelsea this season have played as much football as Antonio Rudiger. The German is undeniably one of Maurizio Sarri’s most trusted players, having been a regular in the Premier League so far this term.
The defender has, in fact, started every single league game this season, and that goes to show just how highly-rated the German is at Stamford Bridge.
Unsurprisingly, them, Chelsea are eager for him to commit his future to the club.
According to the Mirror, Chelsea are hopeful that Rudiger will be the next player to agree fresh terms at the club, with the German seemingly in line to follow the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso in committing to the Blues long-term.
The Blues have been eager to tie down many of their key players long-term, and Rudiger certainly falls under the banner of being indispensable.
It remains to be seen when or, indeed, if the Blues will be able to tie him down, but it’s clearly on the agenda for the Chelsea brass.
This is a smart move from Chelsea. Antonio Rudiger may have only moved to Chelsea as a still-developing defender with potential, but he’s since turned into one of the Premier League’s best and most consistent options.
In fact, the centre-half is, in many ways, the complete package. He’s good with the ball at his feet, he’s strong in the air, and Maurizio Sarri really seems to rate him.
If Chelsea are able to tie him down, that would put three of Chelsea’s four key defenders on long-term deals at the club, with both Azpilicueta and Alonso having already signed.
It remains to be seen as to whether David Luiz will be given an extension or, indeed, whether Andreas Christensen will get the nod long-term – but there are clearly positive strides being made by the club.
