Report details significant developments in race for Newcastle and Tottenham target

Newcastle United and Tottenham supporters have been in contrasting moods in the Transfer Tavern this week, what with the Magpies losing both of their games before the international break, while Spurs picked up victories in their two matches prior to the fortnight’s interruption.

Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle made a fine start to the Premier League season but their momentum was checked by Sean Dyche’s Burnley on October 30 after going down 1-0 at Turf Moor, and things got worse a few days later for the North East giants as Bournemouth picked up a deserved 1-0 win at St James’ Park. However, things were going a lot better for Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs as they brilliantly beat Real Madrid in the Champions League to book their place in the last 16, before edging past Crystal Palace 1-0 in the Premier League to draw level on points with second place Manchester United.

Thus, both sets of supporters have been in very different moods in the Tavern this week, yet both are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Fanatik, which outlines some significant developments in the chase for Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, a reported target of the Premier League duo.

The 26-year-old moved to the Turkish giants back in 2014 and has since proven his worth to the club with an impressive 60 goals in just 133 games, 20 of which came in only 33 league games last term to help Besiktas record a second successive Super Lig title.

And with ten goals in just 15 games so far this season, the Turkey international continues to underline his goal-scoring credentials, and they are credentials which have reportedly attracted the interest of Benitez’s Newcastle and Pochettino’s Tottenham.

And the race for the striker could well be hotting up as recent reports suggest that Besiktas vice president Ahmet Nur Cebi has travelled to the United Kingdown to hold talks with interested parties, suggesting that the Turkish outfit could indeed be considering selling Tosun should they get the right fee.

Thus, this appears to be as good a chance as any for either Newcastle or Spurs to lay down a marker in pursuit of the goal-scoring sensation.

Landlord’s verdict: Cenk Tosun continues to be one of the most lethal strikers in European football having netted ten goals in just 15 games for Besiktas this season, building on his tally of 24 goals in all competitions last time round.

And his incredible prowess in front of goal has reportedly attracted the interest of Newcastle United and Tottenham, both of whom may well have been met in recent times by Besiktas vice president Ahmet Nur Cebi, who has reportedly travelled to the UK to speak with interested parties.

This would suggest that the Turkish club are open to selling the 26-year-old, which provides a perfect opportunity for either the Magpies or Spurs to state their intent and lay down a marker in the pursuit of the goal machine.
