Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side reach the fourth round of the FA Cup with a narrow 2-1 success over Merseyside rivals Everton at Anfield on Friday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Toffees embarking on a 13-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League, a run which has seen them usurp both Arsenal and Tottenham to sit fourth in the table. And our resident Reds fans could well be celebrating cup success come the end of the campaign as goals from James Milner and Virgil van Dijk have taken them a step closer to their first FA Cup crown since 2006, with Gylfi Sigurdsson’s second half equaliser not enough to earn Sam Allardyce’s men a replay.
Thus, there have been several buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Rai Radio (via talkSPORT), which details comments from Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini outlining how much it will cost to sign reported Liverpool target Nicolo Barella this month.
The 20-year-old midfielder came up through the ranks at the Italian club and has since gone on to play 58 times for the Serie A outfit, 28 of which coming last season to help the side to 11th place in the top-flight.
And with two goals in 18 games this term, as well as a whole host of impressive performances, the Italy Under-21 international has reportedly attracted much attention from clubs around the continent, with Inter Milan, Juventus, and indeed Liverpool thought to be keen on landing the starlet.
And recent comments from Cagliari’s president suggest that it will cost those clubs £44 million to lure Barella away from the Italian club, in news which may be of interest to Reds boss Klopp given that they will receive a substantial sum from the sale of Philippe Coutinho.
But whether they do indeed go in for the 20-year-old sensation remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Nicolo Barella has been making great strides in Serie A with Cagliari so far this season, starting 18 of their 20 league games thus far, and producing many impressive displays along the way.
And it seems that the Italian outfit know what a huge star he could become as reports suggest that a substantial figure of at least £44 million will be needed to lure him away from the top-flight side, with Inter Milan, Juventus, and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool thought to be interested.
And with the Reds having sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona, and likely to lose Emre Can at some stage in 2018, they may look at Barella as an ideal midfield option for both the present and indeed the future, but whether they are willing to meet that substantial price-tag remains to be seen.
