Manchester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side get back to winning ways in the Premier League with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Watford on Tuesday night.
Pep Guardiola’s men went into their clash with the Hornets off the back of drawing 0-0 with Crystal Palace on New Year’s Eve, thus seeing their incredible 18-match winning streak in the league come to an end. Yet they didn’t dwell on that too long at all as goals from Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero, as well as an own goal from Christian Kabasele, secured a routine success for the Citizens, with Andre Gray’s late consolation doing little to concern the City faithful as they saw their side go 15 points clear at the summit of the Premier League.
Subsequently, there have been many thrilled Citizens fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which discloses the price the club will have to pay to lure Alexis Sanchez away from Arsenal this month.
The 29-year-old has long been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium and thus a reunion with boss Guardiola, with whom he worked at Barcelona in the 2011/12 season, netting 15 goals in 41 appearances to help the club to second place in La Liga, and indeed the semi-finals of the Champions League.
And the Chile international has since gone from strength to strength at Arsenal by scoring 80 goals in just 164 games for the club, but with his contract up in the summer and an extension seemingly unlikely, a move away this month could well be in the offing.
And recent reports suggest that the Gunners could consider bids ‘in excess of £25 million’ for the attacker, which is news sure to intrigue City boss Guardiola, as well as Paris Saint-Germain chief Unai Emery, who has also been linked with Sanchez.
Thus, it very much remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old does indeed leave the Emirates Stadium this month.
Landlord’s verdict: Gabriel Jesus looks set for spell on the sidelines after hobbling off in Manchester City’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace last weekend, which has since heightened the expectation around the country that the club will go in for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez this month.
The 29-year-old is almost certain to leave the Gunners at some stage this year yet Arsene Wenger’s side may seek to cash in on him this month, with reports suggesting that offers ‘in excess of £25 million’ could be considered to avoid losing him on a free in the summer.
And with that price seemingly loose change for a club that spent close to £200 million in the summer, City could well seek to do a deal with Arsenal, although are likely to face competition from Paris Saint-Germain in a transfer saga which could come to a conclusion in the next few weeks.
