Report: Lionel Messi could scupper Mourinho’s attempt to land dream target

The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club will be successful in their pursuit of Willian this summer, but recent reports have given them reason to be sceptical about their chances.

Jose Mourinho is widely-known to be a huge admirer of Willian whom he worked alongside during his time as Chelsea manager. The Portuguese man has often been criticised for neutralising the attacking quality of wide players who are forced to compromise their creativity to ensure they remain defensively solid, but Willian is a player who has the engine to ensure he can do a job at both ends of the field.

With that in mind, it’s no wonder that Mourinho is hoping for a reunion with the Brazil international this summer, however, a recent report from the Manchester Evening News suggests that a potential deal for his services could be scuppered by Lionel Messi.

According to the report, Barcelona are also interested in signing Willian this summer because they want “an explosive player to liberate Messi.”

On the evidence of his mind-blowing career so far, it’s hardly as if Messi’s quality has been suppressed by the lack of hard-working attacking players around him, but the need for a player of Willian’s calibre and work-rate could become increasingly necessary as the Argentine moves into his thirties.

Landlord’s verdict

Our landlord believes that the Messi theory makes perfect sense and United should have some genuine concerns over their chances of signing Willian this summer.

Considering United are lacking the presence of a natural right-winger who can dribble past players and settle into Mourinho’s system, Willian is effectively the perfect target for the club to pursue this summer as his blend of attacking flair and defensive solidity is hard to come by in world football.

But with Barcelona also knocking on the door there’s no doubt United will have a huge task on their hands in persuading the Chelsea man to chose Manchester over Catalonia.
