Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern will want the club to kick-on with their transfer business this summer now that they have tied down Mark Hughes to a three-year deal.
The former Stoke City manager managed to lift the Saints to survival in the final Premier League match of the season and was rewarded with a permanent contract. The Welshman will be wanting to make sure his side are not in a similar position next year and will be looking to make a number of additions.
According to a report in The Yorkshire Post, Southampton are thought to be lining up a move for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson. The defender has impressed in the Championship for Boro and has also attracted interest from other top-flight clubs, including Everton.
However, Middlesbrough’s failure to earn promotion to the Premier League could force the defender to leave the Riverside Stadium and the Saints will be one of the sides at the front of the queue waiting to prise him away.
Gibson would be considered a great acquisition for the Saints should he join this summer as the 25-year-old has proved to be a consistent performer for Boro and has plenty of experience.
It is thought the club would need to make a hefty offer to tempt Tony Pulis into a deal as he only recently signed a new five-year deal to remain at the Riverside Stadium.
