The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the arrival of Naby Keita this summer, but recent reports regarding another rising star in European football have given them further reason to be excited ahead of the transfer window.
According to a tweet from Canal Plus reporter Romain Collet-Gaudin, Liverpool have met with Lyon’s Nabil Fekir ahead of a proposed €70 million transfer this summer and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, he will become a Liverpool player before the beginning of the 2018-19 season. Fekir (valued at £45 million by Transfermarkt) has been linked with a transfer to the Premier League for the majority of the season so far due to his brilliant record in Ligue 1, and the report from Collet-Gaudin suggests the speculation will finally be put to rest this summer.
The 24-year-old French international has been in sensational form for Lyon this season as he has notched 22 goals and provided 7 assists from 38 appearances in all-competitions – including a finely executed free-kick against the French Champions PSG back in January. Operating in a number ten role, Fekir combines dazzling dribbling with incisive passing to devastating effect in the final-third of the pitch, but he would need to adapt into a new role at Liverpool.
It’s likely that Fekir has been identified as a long-term replacement for Philippe Coutinho, however, the Brazilian used to operate in a slightly deeper midfield position to what Fekir has become accustomed to at Lyon, so he would certainly require ample time to adapt to his new surroundings regardless of the magnitude of his transfer fee.
With time and patience, though, Fekir could represent the final piece in Jurgen Klopp’s jigsaw and ultimately result in the German manager’s first Premier League title next season. The prospect of seeing a front-four of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Fekir is a frightening one for the heavyweights of English football to contemplate over, and that’s without even considering the arrival of Keita.
Liverpool’s counter-attacking dynamism and fluency has been a defining feature of their play this season. Adding Fekir to the equation will only boost the Reds’ chances of rivalling Man City for the greatest prize in English football, so the Liverpool supporters should be hoping there is wholesome truth in the latest reports emerging from France.
