Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has it all to do if he is to save the Magpies from the drop this season, with the Spaniard actively seeking to improve his squad in the transfer market to provide a much-needed boost.
Fans here in The Transfer Tavern have been left frustrated by their side’s lack of progress in the window so far, and vented their anger to our landlord over a couple of afternoon pints. Expecting news of arrivals, it was a potential departure in the headlines today, with Football Insider reporting that the Magpies had now rejected a staggering twenty-two loan bids for out of favour striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, with Benitez only willing to allow the player to leave on a permanent basis.
Offers have reportedly materialised from clubs including Brighton, West Brom, Marseille and Partizan Belgrade, but the player will not be able to leave St James’ Park for any less than the £14 million price tag slapped upon his head. However it appears that the pricey tag is putting off potential suitors, with many baulking at Newcastle’s huge asking price.
Landlord’s Verdict: Newcastle must lower their demands if they wish to offload Mitrovic from the club, as nobody in the European game will pay such a lofty figure for an out of form man. If Benitez wants to acquire funds to utilise in this window, he must consider shaving several million off the price.
Mitrovic is young enough to find his feet once again with a new side, and if a club can find the money to activate his release from the north east, they will have a talented player on their hands.
