Crystal Palace fans in the Transfer Tavern finally had something to cheer about over the weekend after seeing their side beat Premier League champions Chelsea 2-1 to register their first league victory of the campaign.
Roy Hodgson’s men had prior to that lost each of their opening seven league matches to sit firmly rooted to the bottom of the division, and what’s more they failed to score in any of those games as well. However, an own goal from Cesar Azpilicueta and a strike from Wilfried Zaha was enough to seal the three points against Antonio Conte’s men, sparking jubilant scenes around Selhurst Park, as well as among our resident Eagles fans lining up at the bar in the Tavern.
And there may even more encouragement to come for those hardly Palace fans if a recent report from Turkish-Football is anything to go by, as they detail an update on the Eagles’ pursuit of Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun.
The 26-year-old made the move to the Turkish giants back in 2014 and has since played a huge part in helping them win back-to-back Super Lig titles, with his tally of 20 goals in just 33 league games last term helping them finish four points clear at the summit.
And with five goals in all competitions already this season, taking his tally to 55 in 128 games for the club, the Turkey international isn’t letting up, and it’s form which continues to attract the interest of Hodgson’s Palace, what with the London-based side having a bid for Tosun rejected late on in the summer window.
And reports suggest that they will again be scouting the striker when Besiktas take on Monaco in the Champions League this evening, a competition in which the 26-year-old scored in their 3-1 win over Porto on matchday one, before grabbing an assist in their 2-0 success over Leipzig last time out.
And another fine showing at the Stade Louis II this evening is sure to raise even greater question marks over his future at the Turkish champions.
Landlord’s verdict: Cenk Tosun’s future at Besiktas has been subject to speculation for a while now, especially since Crystal Palace launched an unsuccessful bid late on in the summer window.
That doesn’t appear to have put the Eagles off though, with reports yesterday suggesting that they were willing to up that offer in January, while reports today indicate that they will again be watching Tosun in action against Monaco this evening in the Champions League.
Palace are suffering from a striking crisis at present and could do with someone like the Turkey international to lead their line, and another impressive display this even may just convince them to launch another bid come the New Year.
