Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern were in good voice on Sunday after seeing their side record another Premier League victory.
The Gunners made it four games unbeaten and back-to-back league wins with a comfortable 2-0 success over newly-promoted Brighton at the Emirates Stadium, with goals from Nacho Monreal and Alex Iwobi securing the three points for Arsene Wenger’s side.
The result lifted the North London giants up to fifth in the division, albeit still six points behind the Manchester duo at the summit, and there may be further promising news for our resident Arsenal supporters if a recent report from Premium Sport (via The Daily Mail) is anything to go by.
And that’s because they report quotes from Inter Milan president Erick Thohir, which suggests that the Serie A giants will be unable to sign Mesut Ozil from the Gunners in January.
The 28-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and, as of yet, hasn’t agreed a new deal with Wenger’s side, leaving him open to talk to foreign clubs when the New Year comes around.
The German World Cup winner has been struggling with injury in recent weeks and missed the win over Brighton on Sunday, but still boasts a fine record of 32 goals and 57 assists in 166 games for the Gunners, helping them to win three FA Cup titles.
But his future has been subject to much speculation this year given his contract situation, although it’s a situation Inter don’t feel they can exploit in the upcoming January transfer window, according to president Thohir.
He said: ‘We are studying our squad. We have scouts everywhere and they look at every kind of player.
‘I don’t think players like him (Ozil) will be leaving in January.’
These comments are sure to intrigue Arsenal supporters, who have seen their side avoid defeat in all six games Ozil hasn’t featured in this season, including the Community Shield final against Chelsea, as well as the 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge last month.
Landlord’s verdict: It’s fair to say that Mesut Ozil divides opinion among many fans up and down the country, although his record for Arsenal does suggest that they may miss him should he move on within the next 12 months.
32 goals and 57 assists in four years is a fine return for a player who is often criticised for his lack of defensive effort, yet given the Gunners’ recent resurgence without the 28-year-old, you wonder whether they could indeed flourish without him.
Nonetheless, Inter Milan aren’t confident of landing him in January despite his contract situation, leaving Ozil with a very uncertain future should he decide against penning a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.
