Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern finally had something to cheer about over the weekend as their side got back to winning ways.
Ronald Koeman’s men were in the midst of a four-game losing streak prior to Saturday’s visit of AFC Bournemouth, and that rot looked set to continue when Josh King gave the Cherries the lead four minutes into the second half.
However, the Toffees hit back through an Oumar Niasse brace to secure their first Premier League win since the opening day, and several of our resident Evertonians supporters are likely to be further intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Mail.
And that’s because they outline that Premier League giants Arsenal have been keeping an eye on midfielder Idrissa Gueye, which has subsequently forced the Toffees to open contract talks with the 28-year-old in a bid to fend off potential suitors.
The Senegal international moved to Goodison Park back in 2016 following a one-year stint at Aston Villa, and has certainly proved his worth to the Merseyside outfit with 33 Premier League appearances last term, as well as starts in all six of their league matches this time round.
And his impressive displays in the heart of the Everton midfield has seen him shoot to the top of Ronald Koeman’s pecking order, and has indeed reportedly attracted the interest of Wenger’s Arsenal.
However, with the Toffees preparing a new deal for Gueye, it doesn’t look like Arsenal’s advances will go much further.
Landlord’s verdict: Much has been made of Arsenal’s weaknesses over the years, with many feeling that the defence and central midfield department has been hindering their chances of sustaining a Premier League title challenge.
Thus, reported interest in Everton’s Idrissa Gueye is likely to intrigue and perhaps delight several Gunners supporters, although their interest has reportedly forced the Toffees into beginning contract negotiations with the 28-year-old, which is likely to end Arsenal’s pursuit there and then.
Gueye has been mightily impressive for the Merseyside outfit in the last 12 months, and looks set to be rewarded with a new deal which is likely going to come as a blow to Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal.
