Newcastle fans were relatively buoyant in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after watching their side draw with Liverpool.
The North East giants had a week earlier lost 1-0 away at Brighton to bring their three match winning streak to an end, but Rafa Benitez’s side bounced back with a fine performance against the Reds, drawing 1-1 at St James’ Park.
And there may be more good news to come for our resident Magpies supporters, as recent reports from France Football suggest that their club are interested in Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
The 24-year-old came up through the ranks at the French giants to earn his senior debut for the club back in May 2013, from which he has since gone from strength to strength with further PSG appearances, as well as loan stints at Lens, Bastia, and Villarreal.
And the Frenchman has started this term as Unai Emery’s number one at the Parc des Princes with eight Ligue 1 and two Champions League appearances, but he has yet to extend his contract with the European heavyweights, which currently runs until 2019.
And although Rob Elliot has done well between the sticks this season, Areola has a huge future ahead of him, yet he is also showcasing his talent in the present as well.
But with Juventus also thought to be interested, it’s going to be a tough ask convincing the 24-year-old sensation to make the move to St James’ Park.
Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United endured a frustrating summer transfer window, with the club failing to land several reported targets.
And one area they seemingly had hoped to strengthen was the goalkeeping department, which is why reports that they are keeping a close eye on Paris Saint-Germain’s Alphonse Areola is hardly much of a surprise.
The 24-year-old has become the club’s number one this season but doesn’t appear willing to pen a new deal with the French giants, and with his current one set to expire in 2019, things could get very interesting over the course of the next 12 months.
With Juventus also interested, it’ll be tough for Newcastle to lure him to the North East, but it would also be a huge statement of intent to the rest of the Premier League if they could indeed bring Areola to St James’ Park.
