Newcastle United supporters have been in great voice in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing the Magpies edge past Crystal Palace 1-0 on Saturday, in turn securing their fourth Premier League victory of the campaign.
Rafa Benitez’s side went into their clash with the London-based outfit having won three and drawn two of their opening eight league games, but would have viewed a visit from the division’s bottom side as a great opportunity to get back to winning ways after draws against Liverpool and Southampton. And so it proved as a Mikel Merino header four minutes from time sealed a 1-0 victory for the North East giants, a result which propelled them up to seventh place in the Premier League table, and to within two points of the top four.
Unsurprisingly, many of our resident Newcastle fans lining up at the bar were thrilled with their side’s efforts against the Eagles, and they are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report in The Sun, which suggests that the Magpies are keeping tabs on two goalkeepers ahead of the January window, namely Geronimo Rulli and Fernando Muslera.
25-year-old Rulli currently plays his trade at La Liga outfit Real Sociedad and has done so since January of this year after leaving Premier League outfit Manchester City, and he has certainly proven his credentials this term with four clean sheets in 11 outings for the club, conceding 20 goals in the process.
While Uruguay international shot-stopper Muslera made the move to Turkish giants Galatasaray back in 2011 and has since gone on to appear 254 times for the club, keeping 80 clean sheets and ultimately helping them to three domestic league titles, as well as three Turkish Cup crowns.
And the talented duo are reportedly on the radar of Benitez and Newcastle, who clearly feel that their shot-stopping options need bolstering despite the fine recent form of Rob Elliot, who has kept three clean sheets and shipped just nine goals in eight Premier League appearances this season.
But whether the Magpies firm up their interest in the aforementioned duo in January remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: There was much frustration around Newcastle United during the summer, such was their apparent struggles to land top transfer targets.
A goalkeeper appeared to be one area they were looking to bolster, and that seems to be the same now as the Magpies are reportedly keeping tabs on Real Sociedad’s Geronimo Rulli and Galatasaray’s Fernando Muslera.
This is likely to come as a surprise to Newcastle fans given how well Rob Elliot has done so far this season, but with Karl Darlow second choice at present and seemingly out of favour, another more convincing option may be required in January.
