Newcastle United fans have been in good voice in the Transfer Tavern during the international break given their side’s fine start to the season.
Rafa Benitez’s men have won three of their seven Premier League games upon return to the top-flight to sit ninth in the division, and also picked up a credible 1-1 draw with Liverpool prior to the fortnight’s interruption to underline their vast improvement.
The Magpies return to league action against Southampton on Sunday, but one man who may struggle to get a starting place is striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, and his future is the subject of a recent report in The Sun.
And that’s because they report that fellow top tier side Brighton, who came up automatically from the Championship with Newcastle last season, are considering a January move for the Serbia international.
The 23-year-old moved to St James’ Park back in 2015 and has since gone to score 17 goals in 67 appearances for the North East giants, including four in their promotion-winning campaign last term.
However, Mitrovic has struggled for first team football this season, playing just 18 minutes in the Premier League, and as such his future at the club remains unclear heading towards the January window.
And it’s uncertainty which ex-Magpies boss Chris Hughton is seeking to exploit, having reportedly sent scouts to keep tabs on the striker in his country’s 3-2 defeat to Austria on Friday night ahead of a potential move in the New Year.
And with the Seagulls in need of reinforcements, and Mitrovic’s Newcastle career seemingly heading only one way, it’s a deal which could very well take place in January.
Landlord’s verdict: Aleksandar Mitrovic is certainly a player capable of competing and scoring goals at Premier League level, but ultimately isn’t reliable enough in terms of discipline to warrant regular first team football.
The Serbian star’s elbow on Manuel Lanzini back in August saw him banned for three matches and fail to appear for the Magpies since, with it becoming clearer by the day that he doesn’t feature in Rafa Benitez’s plans.
And Brighton seemingly want to take advantage of that in January, having scouted Mitrovic recently on international duty, in a deal which would appear to be in the best interests of all parties involved.
