Tottenham supporters have been in good spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side pick up two crucial victories over Real Madrid and Crystal Palace prior to the international break, both of which enhancing their chances of success this season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men may well have lost 1-0 to Manchester United a fortnight ago but they soon put that right with a masterful 3-1 win over Zinedine Zidane’s Real at Wembley, a result which booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time since 2011. And they backed that up with an equally important but much less straightforward 1-0 success over Roy Hodgson’s Palace in the Premier League, with Son Heung-min’s second half goal enough to draw Spurs level with second place United in the table.
Thus, there have been many happy Tottenham supporters in the Tavern this week, and they may be about to get even chirpier if a recent report from Italian newspaper Tuttosport (via HITC) is anything to go by.
And that’s because they report that Spurs are set to rival Atletico Madrid for the signature of talented defender German Pezzella, currently on loan at Fiorentina from Spanish side Real Betis.
The 26-year-old made the move to Betis back in 2015 after a long association with River Plate, and went from strength to strength with 66 appearances for the La Liga outfit, 36 of which coming in the league last season to help the club to a 15th place finish in the Spanish top-flight.
Yet the Argentina international was snapped up by Fiorentina on loan at the start of the current campaign and has played in all but one of their 12 Serie A games, and he must be doing something right as reports suggest that Spurs and Atletico are lining up a move for the defender before the Italian outfit secure a permanent deal for Pezzella.
Thus, time is very much of the essence, but whether Pochettino is able to beat compatriot Diego Simeone to the Argentine remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Tottenham made some important signings over the summer to significantly strengthen their squad, with the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Serge Aurier, and Fernando Llorente coming in to give Mauricio Pochettino a squad that can challenge for major honours.
Yet it seems that the Argentine wants more defensive options at his disposal, as he is reportedly eyeing up a move for countryman German Pezzella, who is impressing on a loan spell with Fiorentina.
And, unsurprisingly, the Italian club are seeking to land a permanent deal for the 26-year-old, which means that Spurs, as well as Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid who are also thought to be interested, will have to act fast and put together a package that can lure him away from the Serie A outfit.
Only time will tell whether either can do just that.
