Southampton supporters in the Transfer Tavern were encouraged by their side in the Saints’ 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on Sunday, a result which moved the South Coast outfit into the top half of the Premier League table.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash with the North East giants having lost three of their previous four league games, as well as three successive matches at St Mary’s, and that difficult run looked set to continue when Rafa Benitez’s side twice went ahead, first through Isaac Hayden and then Ayoze Perez at the start of the second half.
However, Manolo Gabbiadini twice levelled to secure the hosts a point from the afternoon’s excursions, and in doing so lifted Pellegrino’s side up to ninth in the division, a place and two points adrift of Sunday’s opponents.
And there may be more good news on the way for our resident Saints fans if a recent report from The Daily Mail is anything to go by, as they report that Southampton are in the chase for highly-rated MK Dons full-back Callum Brittain.
The 19-year-old came up through the ranks at the stadium:mk to earn his senior debut for the Dons at the start of 2017, coming on as substitute in their 4-0 thrashing of Peterborough United on January 28.
And he has since then made a further 17 first team appearances for Robbie Nielson’s side, including starts in seven of their 12 League One matches this term to underline the huge strides he’s making at the third tier outfit.
And they are strides which have reportedly attracted the interest of Pellegrino’s Southampton, as well as Chelsea and Tottenham, all of whom will be looking at Brittain’s expiring contract in the summer as a chance to lure him to their clubs.
But whether the 19-year-old starlet does indeed make the step up over the coming transfer windows very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Callum Brittain only made his MK Dons debut back in January of this year, and 10 months later he is attracting interest from some of English football’s biggest clubs.
The 19-year-old has become a prominent and integral part of Robbie Neilson’s team at the stadium:mk, and as such Chelsea, Tottenham, and Southampton are all keeping tabs on his progress, and indeed his contract situation, what with it due to expire next summer.
But the latter’s recent history of bringing players through and giving them a chance may be enough to convince Brittain of a move to St Mary’s, although both Chelsea and Spurs may have something to say about that.
