West Ham fans were in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing their side get back to winning ways in the Premier League.
The East London outfit slipped into the bottom three last weekend following their 3-2 defeat to Tottenham at the London Stadium, but Slaven Bilic’s men bounced back with a narrow 1-0 success over Swansea City on Saturday, with Diafra Sakho netting the winner in the 90th minute.
That late goal sparked jubilant scenes among our resident Hammers supporters, and they are also likely to be intrigued by a recent report from CalcioMercato (via Football.London), which outlines some interesting information about a possible incoming at the club in January.
And that’s because they report that Bilic’s men are set to rival Fiorentina and Watford in the race for Estoril midfielder Matheus Jesus, an Under-20 Brazil international making great strides in his homeland.
The young midfielder moved to Portuguese outfit Estoril over the summer but just a few weeks later was shipped out on loan to Brazilian club Santos, for whom he has had to be patient to get his chance, which eventually came at the end of last month.
And he has since added another league appearance to his tally to suggest that he is becoming an increasingly important member of the Santos squad, and his talent and undoubted potential has reportedly caught the eye of several European sides, notably West Ham, Fiorentina, and Watford.
And with the Hammers in need of further midfield reinforcements, Jesus may be the answer, but whether they are able to get ahead of the aforementioned duo and seal a deal very much remains to be seen,
Landlord’s verdict: West Ham spent the last knockings of the summer transfer window attempting to bring Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho to the London Stadium, only for a deal to fall through for one reason or another.
Yet the central midfield department is one the Hammers are lacking significant quality and depth in, so reports linking them with a move for Estoril’s Matheus Jesus aren’t overly surprising.
The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Brazilian side Santos and has forced his way into first team reckoning recently, suggesting that he has the ability to make a difference in the present as well as the future.
And he could be exactly the sort of player Slaven Bilic needs in his midfield ranks to climb up the Premier League table.
