Monaco’s Joao Moutinho was heavily linked with a £18m switch to Arsenal over the summer, which never materialised, and the 29-year-old has now dropped a major hint that he could be looking to leave the French principality outfit.
Arriving in 2013 as part of Monaco’s oil-rich investment, alongside James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao, Moutinho has seen the situation at the Ligue 1 side change drastically. Owner Dmitry Rybolovlev has tightened his financial input, whilst UEFA’s own Financial Fair Play regulations have also had an effect.
As such, James Rodriguez and Falcao have since moved on and a wealth of players were sold this summer; with Geoffrey Kondogbia, Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco, Layvin Kurzawa and Anthony Martial all departing.
Moutinho expressed his sadness with the change in situation, suggesting he could be the next big-name to leave the Ligue 1 outfit.
“The project has changed. It is no longer the one that I came for. I don’t feel hard done by but I do feel sad. I want to play in a team that is playing to win all the competitions. And, in this project, that is more difficult.”
