The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting a few big names to come through the doors at Stamford Bridge this summer…
Last season was a very successful one for the Blues, but next year is going to be far tougher. As the teams around them improve, there is a genuine risk that Chelsea could get left behind – and Conte simply cannot afford to let that happen.
There has been some transfer movement at Chelsea this summer, though, but much of it has surrounded potential outgoings. Most notably, the future of Diego Costa has come under the microscope, with reports suggesting that a move to Atletico Madrid could be on the cards.
Whilst losing a player of his quality would be bad news for Chelsea, it could also be beneficial, as according to AS – it could open the door for a big summer move for the Blues. AS are reporting that the sale of Costa, should it happen, could see Chelsea reinvest the funds into a move for James Rodriguez – whom Chelsea are touted to launch a ‘hard’ move for this summer.
Rodriguez, of course, is one of Europe’s most recognisable players – having moved to Real Madrid following a stellar display during the 2014 World Cup. Since that point, he has enjoyed a mixed spell at Real Madrid – particularly struggling to impress last season. As a result, he could be sacrificed by the club this summer – and Chelsea could look to pounce.
Given the Blues’ relative lack of offensive depth – with just Willian, Pedro and Eden Hazard currently available behind the forward – our landlord thinks that Rodriguez would be a good fit.
