Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been left wondering what might have been, after it was revealed the club failed with an astronomical bid for a star player last summer.
French outlet L’Equipe have revealed that Chelsea were unsuccessful with a late move for Juventus ace Paul Pogba, seeing a bid of between £70-74m rejected by the Turin giants.
The French international is one of the most highly-coveted players in world football, having established himself as a genuine superstar since leaving Manchester United for regular first-team action with Serie A powerhouses Juventus.
With Chelsea’s current record transfer standing at the £50m they splashed on Fernando Torres back in 2011, a deal for Pogba would have shattered that record and would have also see Pogba become the most expensive player in British football history.
However, it seems the chances of Pogba moving to Stamford Bridge are now over and despite Chelsea’s new manager looking likely to be former Juventus boss Antonio Conte, Pogba is certain to demand Champions League football that Chelsea simply cannot offer.
