Reports suggest Man City star could be Italy-bound in January

Manchester City fans have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern in recent weeks given their side’s wonderful run of form.

Pep Guardiola’s men have won their last seven matches in all competitions to move to the top of the Premier League and indeed their Champions League group, as well reach the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

The Citizens backed up their 5-0 mauling of Crystal Palace last weekend by easing past Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 in midweek, and that sets them up perfectly for a tricky trip to Premier League champions Chelsea on Saturday.

And there may some news of intrigue for our resident City fans if a recent report from CalcioMercato is anything to go by, which details some information regarding the future of Citizens centre-back Eliaquim Mangala.

The 26-year-old moved to the Etihad Stadium back in 2014 following a three-year stint at Porto, but has since managed just 66 appearances in all competitions for City, 49 of which have come in the Premier League.

In fact, the France international is so low down Guardiola’s pecking order that he spent the entirety of last season on loan at Spanish side Valencia, and although he has featured in the league for the Citizens this term, it doesn’t appear that he has a future at the Etihad Stadium.

And Serie A giants Inter Milan may well be seeking to reignite their interest in the defender having been linked with him over the summer, as reports suggest that his agent Jorge Mendes has recently spoken to Inter’s director of football Walter Sabatini.

With Mangala out of favour at City, and Inter seemingly interested in doing a deal, it’s a move that could certainly take place when the window reopens in January.

Landlord’s verdict: Eliaquim Mangala quite simply hasn’t been the answer for Manchester City since his arrival back in 2014, and as such his time at the Etihad Stadium is drawing to a conclusion.

He was shipped out on loan to Valencia last season to underline his lowly position in Pep Guardiola’s pecking order, and was subsequently linked with a move to Inter Milan during the summer.

No move materialised but Mangala’s agent has been seen with Inter’s director of football, which has led to speculation that the deal could be back on in January.

And with the 26-year-old unlikely to force his way into Guardiola’s plans, a deal in January may be in the best interests of all parties involved.
