Respite for suffering Everton fans as promising transfer reports emerge

Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern were left to bemoan another disappointing performance from their side after seeing the Toffees only muster a 1-1 draw at Brighton on Sunday, leaving them just two points above the Premier League’s bottom three.

Ronald Koeman’s men went into their clash with the Seagulls having won just two of their opening seven league matches, and looked set to suffer a fourth defeat of the campaign when Anthony Knockaert gave Chris Hughton’s side the lead eight minutes from time after benefiting from sloppy play from Morgan Schneiderlin. However, the visitors snatched a point when Wayne Rooney slotted home a 90th minute penalty following Bruno’s elbow on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, although it didn’t detract from another lacklustre display from Koeman’s side, and one that keeps them 16th in the Premier League table.

However, there may be some encouraging news to come for our suffering resident Evertonians if a recent report from Marca (via Sport Witness) is anything to go by, as it outlines an intriguing update on the future of Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro.

The 30-year-old made the move to the Spanish capital back in 2016 following a three-year stint at Sevilla, and went on to score 12 goals and lay on five assists in 31 La Liga matches for Diego Simeone’s side last term, although things have not gone at all well this time round for the Frenchman.

Gameiro has managed just 27 minutes of league action for the Spanish heavyweights and hasn’t appeared in either of their Champions League clashes, and with Diego Costa and Vitolo arriving in January, his position in the pecking order is only going to get worse.

And as such speculation has been rife about a possible move to Everton, and recent reports suggest that the forward is indeed struggling to convince Simeone of his capabilities, and thus a January move away appears likely.

And this update is surely going to provide some respite for our resident Toffees, who know their side are in dire need of attacking reinforcements having scored just five Premier League goals so far this season.

Landlord’s verdict: Kevin Gameiro enjoyed a fine debut season at Atletico Madrid last term, netting 16 goals in all competitions to help Diego Simeone’s side reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, and indeed finish third in La Liga.

However, the 30-year-old has been restricted to just 27 minutes of league action this time round to underline his lowly position in the pecking order, which is only going to get worse when Diego Costa and Vitolo join the club in January.

And recent reports in Spain have again suggested that a January move away is likely for Gameiro, news which must intrigue Everton and manager Ronald Koeman, who are in serious need of striking reinforcements.

It might set them back a sizable sum of money, but after their summer window disaster, it may be the only way to appease those suffering Evertonians in the New Year.
