Arsenal face Sporting Lisbon tonight as they look to continue their unbeaten run and wrap up qualification for the next round of the Europa League.
In what was arguably Arsenal’s best performance of the season, Emery’s men held Liverpool to a draw at the weekend and could’ve even beaten Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Going forward, Arsenal constantly troubled a Liverpool defence that has been one of the best in the league this season. At the back too, Arsenal looked much more solid than they have done previously and in defence, Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi both put in excellent performances.
In the first couple of weeks of the season Arsenal’s defending did look extremely suspect at times, with Mustafi himself looking incredibly shaky. Now the Germany international is starting to show signs of some form and has eased the load from the loss of Laurent Koscielny.
According to Emery, Koscielny is close to returning to the side and could well be in action following the upcoming international break.
The 33-year-old has been sidelined since he ruptured his Achilles tendon during Arsenal’s Europa League semi-final clash with Atletico Madrid last year.
The France international missed out on the World Cup as a result of the injury and at 33, his career at the club is surely coming to an end. While he might not a crucial player Arsenal anymore, what he does present is an experienced defender who could offer Emery some crucial depth in the long run and help the side during the tough festive period.
