We are almost three months into the season and Newcastle are still searching for their first win.
A season that started on the wrong foot after an unsuccessful summer transfer window has not got any better, as Newcastle recently succumbed to a home defeat against Brighton.
Newcastle fans are slowly losing faith in their team to find any results, and although they had a tricky fixture list at the beginning season, they simply must have won last Saturday’s match.
The Magpies are now trying to glean glimmers of hope to revive their season, and while they seem few and far between, they may have one for today’s trip to Southampton. That is the return of Salomón Rondón.
The big Venezuelan is returning from an injury he picked up against Crystal Palace earlier in the season and is expected to be in the starting lineup today. The Magpies need a bigger threat in front of goal, and Rondón may well be that, particularly against today’s opposition.
Southampton’s defence have been criticised this season for being weak aerially, especially against Liverpool. Despite boasting the tallest defender in the league in Jannik Vestergaard, he and fellow defender Wesley Hoedt struggled physically against Roberto Firmino. Now the Newcastle frontman is a similar proposition as Liverpool’s Brazilian and may have an equal amount of success.
This may be wishful thinking for Newcastle fans, but currently they do not have a lot to pin their hopes on. The Venezualan may well be their best bet to earning their fist win of the season.
