The Chelsea fans are concerned ahead of their side’s upcoming clash with Watford. The Blues have been struggling lately, and their woes have been made worse by the presence of a number of major injury concerns. Antonio Conte recently revealed that both David Luiz and Tiemoue Bakayoko picked up knocks against Roma, and at the moment, the only first-team midfielder that we can say for certain is available is Cesc Fabregas.
That’s a big problem for Antonio Conte, and whilst the Italian will be hoping to have more choice, he may have to make a few drastic changes. Given Chelsea’s lack of depth, he may have to look towards a few surprise choices as he looks to build his midfield today.
It seems, though, that if Chelsea fans were given the choice, one man would be selected over any other. Our landlord recently polled supporters on who should partner Fabregas in the midfield if the regulars aren’t available, and 40% of fans went for the same player: Kyle Scott. The 19-year-old midfielder has been a regular in the Chelsea squad this season, but has yet to really get his chance, and this could be the perfect chance for him. He’s inexperienced, but he may be Conte’s best choice.
Young Ethan Ampadu, who recently made his Chelsea debut, was also a popular choice, amassing 29% of the vote. Like Scott, he’s inexperienced, but he’s one of Chelsea’s most talented young players. Perhaps his minimal presence in the Chelsea first team squad has put the fans off, though.
Somewhat surprisingly, Andreas Christensen was the least popular obvious choice, with just 19% of fans voting for the Dane. This can be explained by suggesting that he may be needed in defence, but if push comes to shove, he could be an option in midfield too.
Chelsea fans are pretty divided on who they want to choose, and even the 12% of fans that voted for another, unlisted option couldn’t come to a conclusion. In truth, even if Scott is selected, 60% of fans may still be disappointed, and so it’s a tough situation for Conte.
