Chelsea’s upcoming game against AS Roma is massive for the Blues, and the fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling concerned. Antonio Conte’s men have really struggled over the last few weeks, and a loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday has left them feeling as though the Blues are on the edge. Fixture congestion is clearly having an impact, and another loss on Wednesday could worsen Chelsea’s downward spiral.
The Blues’ preparation for the game has been far from perfect, with Nigerian midfielder-turned-defender Victor Moses ruled out of the game after he sustained an injury against Crystal Palace. Antonio Conte will have to make a big call as he looks to replace the Nigerian against Roma, and our landlord recently asked Chelsea fans who he should pick.
In response, a majority of fans, 60% to be exact, would like to see Davide Zappacosta feature, and you would expect that to be the case. The Italian is a talented player, and he impressed against Qarabag in game week one, and so you’d expect him to do a decent job.
Antonio Rudiger, who was our landlord’s choice, came in second place, with 27% of the vote. He isn’t likely to play in his natural position given Conte’s depth in central defence, and he played frequently on the right last season prior to moving to Stamford Bridge. As a former player of Roma, he would know how to best attack and defend against the Italians, but perhaps the oppositions familiarity with his play is putting off Chelsea fans.
Unsurprisingly, Cesar Azpilicueta came in last place with just 13% of the vote. The Spaniard is clearly better suited to a role in the heart of the defence, and so Antonio Conte would be wise to keep him there. The choice is, of course, up to the manager, but it’s clear who Chelsea fans want to see.
