The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned about the future of Antonio Conte.
The Italian’s tenure at Stamford Bridge has been fraught with uncertainty since his arrival in 2016, and that’s unlikely to die down until the moment he departs London. The Daily Mail have even reported last week that he could depart at the end of the season, leaving a lot of concerned faces amongst our resident Blues. Whilst the validity of that report remains to be seen, it certainly makes sense to begin to think about life after Conte – even though the prospect of that happening is likely a concerning one for Blues fans.
However, it appears as though one name that could calm the nerves of the Chelsea faithful is that of Carlo Ancelotti. Clearly still a popular man amongst fans after his last stint at Stamford Bridge, 61% of recently polled Chelsea fans have revealed that they would like to see the Italian return to Stamford Bridge if circumstances allowed it.
Of course, nobody wants to lose Antonio Conte, but his Italian compatriot is clearly one of the more popular potential replacements for the Premier League winner if he does leave. Ancelotti’s last spell with Chelsea, though it ended it disappointing circumstances, had a particularly fruitful first term – with the Italian picking up a Premier League and FA Cup double.
It’s easy to see why the fans want him back, too. Ancelotti built a strong rapport with the Chelsea faithful during his last stint, and it’s clear that he has unfinished business in the Premier League. Significantly, he already knows exactly what it takes to win the league, and so that will appeal to a Chelsea board that is desperate for immediate success. Often, new managers need a short period in order to work out how best to approach the league – as Conte did after suffering a loss to Arsenal last season – but Ancelotti will likely need no such adjustment period.
Not to mention, he also has a very impressive record of developing young players, and with the Blues set to embark on a rebuild of Stamford Bridge over the coming years, funds will be limited – and so that will be very important. Josh McEachran, for example, looked incredible under Ancelotti, only to have his career stall after the manager’s departure. He could look to have a similar effect on the likes of Ethan Ampadu and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
His arrival would tick all the boxes if Conte left, wouldn’t it? He’s clearly not a unanimous favourite, hence the 39% of fans voting against the prospect of the move, but with few top managers currently available, the Italian would certainly be a popular choice.
