The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned at reports linking their side with a move for Andy Carroll. According to the Telegraph, the Englishman is a name that is being considered by the Blues as they look to bring in more attacking quality.
It’s a move that most Blues appear to be against, at least according to a recent poll ran by our landlord. According to that poll, 70% of Chelsea fans are against the idea of him moving to Stamford Bridge, and to be honest, that’s no real surprise.
Carroll has seriously struggled with injury problems over the last few years, having spent long periods in the recovery room since moving to West Ham. Significantly, at 29-years-old, those problems are only going to worsen as he ages and continues to play.
Furthermore, you also have to question his goalscoring record. The Englishman has been far from lethal in recent years, picking up just 7 league goals last season, with 9 the year before. That’s hardly a record that deserves a move to a club like Chelsea.
Clearly, the Blues need more striking quality, but it’s hard to say for certain that Carroll would be an upgrade on Michy Batshuayi, with the former Liverpool man failing to impress our resident Blues in recent years. That Liverpool history also isn’t likely to go down well amongst the Stamford Bridge faithful.
The decision lies with Antonio Conte and the Chelsea brass, but a move for Carroll doesn’t look like it would be very popular amongst fans. That being said, Chelsea do need a new forward, and so decisions will need to be made over the coming weeks.
