Revealed: 73% of polled Chelsea fans want defensive teenager in the first team next season

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are always eager to see a young player make it at Stamford Bridge. The Blues’ academy is up there with Europe’s best given the incredible quality included within it.

One player that must be in with a chance of featuring in the first team next season is young Reece James.

James was named Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year at the end of last season, and with good reason. The versatile defender had a stunning campaign for club and country, and it’s clear that he has a very bright future ahead of him.

Chelsea, fans, though, seemingly think as though the future is now.

We recently asked Chelsea fans whether James is ready for a first-team berth, and they seem to think so.

73% of those polled have revealed that they think that James is good enough to play for the Chelsea first team, whilst just 27% of fans think that the club should loan him out.

This is significant given that the Blues typically look to loan out youngsters before giving them a chance in the first team, but fans evidently want James to bypass this.

The defender has enjoyed a fantastic rise over the last few years, and he’s won a plethora of trophies, too. From the Toulon Tournament with England to the FA Youth Cup with Chelsea, the English defender is already very accomplished.

Whether he gets a role in the Chelsea first team next season remains to be seen, but he’s clearly talented enough to make it.
