We recently made the case that Chelsea should look to sell Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The Englishman has enjoyed a brilliant year or so, and that has naturally led to calls that he should be promoted to the Blues’ first team. He spent his first ever year away from the club on loan at Crystal Palace last season, and he excelled, and he quickly indicated that he had much more of a role to play at Stamford Bridge than to warm the bench. However, unconvinced by his potential and injury record, we made the case that there would never be a better time to sell him.
However, Chelsea fans seem to disagree.
We polled readers on the topic of selling Ruben Loftus-Cheek this summer, and it’s fair to say that a vast majority of supporters are against the idea. Indeed, a whopping 82% of polled fans want him at the club next season, with just 18% in favour of a potential sale.
Of course, at Chelsea at least, there is a bit of a mythos about young players. The club has never really been prolific at generating homegrown talent, and so the mere prospect of seeing someone graduate from the academy is a mouthwatering prospect.
Naturally, then, fans are desperate for Loftus-Cheek to get his chance, and buoyed on by his recent form, they want to see it happen next season. With N’Golo Kante in need of a new partner, given the struggles of Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko, there is certainly space for him.
Whether it happens or not remains to be seen, but a lot of fans will be left disappointed if it doesn’t.
