The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for January to be a progressive one for their club. Though they’ve had a fantastic start to the season, with the return of the Champions League on the horizon and the prospect of a quadruple still very much in the equation, it could be a historic season at the Etihad.
This month, then, a few signings could make all the difference, and so there is a hope that Pep Guardiola will be given the chance to invest. There certainly appear to be a few moves being made in that regard at present, with a number of players linked with a move to the Etihad in recent weeks.
One such player is FC Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti, who L’Equipe have suggested Man City are keen to land. A regular over in La Liga, the Frenchman has been sensational since moving to the Nou Camp, offering fantastic defending in a side that has so often placed more of a focus on offensive quality.
He’s clearly impressed the Man City faithful, with fans seemingly desperate to see this move go through. Indeed, a whopping 87% of polled Man City fans appear keen to land him, with just 13% of recently polled fans voting against the prospect.
Of course, Man City’s team is full of quality, but the defence is arguably a weak point under Pep Guardiola. Vincent Kompany is struggling, John Stones has been injured for much of the season, and with so many games on the horizon, the Man City backline will be stretched to its max.
A move for Umtiti makes sense, then, given his quality. However, it won’t be easy, as Barcelona will likely do all they can to hold onto their defensive star. Stranger things have happened in football, though.
