The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned about Antonio Conte’s team options ahead of their clash with Man Utd this weekend. The Blues have had a few injury problems in recent weeks, with the most notable recent absentee being N’Golo Kante. His availability is still up in the air ahead of the game.
There is a genuine expectation at Chelsea, at least according to the Guardian, that he will be fit, but Conte must prepare in the event that he isn’t – and this is a topic that has generated a lot of talk in the Transfer Tavern recently.
Our landlord recently suggested to the punters in the pub that Danny Drinkwater should get a game if Kante can’t play, and this is a theory that is almost unanimously agreed with amongst Chelsea fans, it seems – at least according to a recent poll.
When polled, a whopping 90% of fans voted for Drinkwater to start the game, and that certainly should give Conte something to think about on the day. He’s pretty unproven in a Chelsea shirt, but he proved during his time with Leicester City that he’s good enough to play at the highest level.
Offering defensive stability and fantastic passing, Drinkwater could be just what Chelsea need. Particularly given the poor recent performances of both Tiemoue Bakayoko and Cesc Fabregas, it’s clear that something needs to change.
Drinkwater, although not a world-renowned name, is incredibly efficient when given an opportunity – and Conte must give him that chance.
