Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are wondering what might have been after their manager revealed the club came close to signing a European star.
The Evening Standard reports that Wenger has revealed the club came close to signing Kingsley Coman before he joined Juventus, with the winger now impressing on-loan at Bayern Munich.
Coman endured a difficult debut season with the Turin giants, making just 20 appearances, but has dramatically increased his form this season with four goals and seven assists in 13 games- which earned him a spot in France’s national side.
Now, when speaking to BeIn Sports, Wenger revealed that Arsenal were agonisingly close to bringing Coman to North London before he joined Juventus in 2014.
“We really tried to sign Kingsley Coman in the summer of 2014. The transfer was almost completed, but he preferred Juventus.”
The 19-year-old cost Bayern just £5m for a season-long loan and the Bavarian side possess an option to purchase the player outright for £16m at the end of the season, which is likely to take place as Bayern consider him to be an exciting asset.
Arsenal fans at the bar are frustrated at ‘almost’ signing these top players, having heard similar previously in the cases of Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and even Lionel Messi.
Gooners, would Coman get into the first-team at Arsenal? Let us know in the comments below!
