The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been locked in debate all week long about who Antonio Conte should pick to start against Barcelona this evening. It is, undoubtedly, the biggest game of Chelsea’s season so far, and the Italian boss is expected to pick his best possible team against the Spanish giants.
Who that team includes, though, remains to be seen. There are a few positions that Conte has a number of options in, and that’s certainly true of the attack.
Conte has often opted to utilise a false-9 in big games like this, with Eden Hazard spearheading a defensive team, whereas he also has both Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata to select from.
In theory, the latter, Alvaro Morata, who is Chelsea’s record signing, would be Conte’s first choice given the financial outlay that his signing demanded, but it doesn’t appear as though fans want to see the forward starting this evening.
Our landlord recently ran a poll asking Chelsea fans who they want to lead the line tonight between Olivier Giroud, Eden Hazard and Morata, and the former was a runaway winner – with Morata achieving just 17% of the fans vote.
That’s certainly a surprise, given how excited fans were for his arrival, but you can understand the perspective.
After all, Morata has been on a really poor run of form, and though he made a sensational start to life in England, he has really failed to follow up on that. Not to mention, he’s had fitness issues as of late too.
The final decision will be Conte’s, but if Morata is selected, we’re expecting a lot of unhappy punters in the Transfer Tavern.
