Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are thanking their lucky stars after it was revealed Liverpool made a move to sign one of their fan-favourites before he arrived at Old Trafford.
22-year-old Jesse Lingard has excelled this season, dislodging £25m signing Memphis Depay from the starting line-up, and his fine form earned him his first senior international call-up last week.
However, the starlet has revealed it could have been an entirely different journey for him as he stated he chose the Red Devils ahead of arch-rivals Liverpool when he was a youngster.
“I was at a local club Penketh United and Mike Glennie, a Manchester United scout, came to watch me,”
“He spoke to my granddad and offered me trials but there was also interest from Liverpool and I had to pick. I was only young but obviously my heart was with United at the time.”
It comes as no surprise to many in the bar, who are aware United and Liverpool often fight for the signature of some of England’s finest talents, and they’re relieved they won this particular race, believing Lingard has the potential to become a star at Old Trafford.
After winning a number of honours outside the first-team, including the FA Youth Cup and the Reserves league title, Lingard is now hoping to lift the Premier League this season.
United fans, how good can Jesse Lingard be? Is he better than Depay? Let us know in the comments below!
