Newcastle United supporters have been pretty satisfied in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side secure a decent point away at fellow Premier League relegation contenders Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Eagles off the back of drawing 1-1 at home with Burnley in midweek, a result which stretched their winless league run to three matches dating back to their narrow success over Stoke City on January 1. Yet they looked on course to get back to winning ways on Sunday as a Mo Diame strike gave them a first half lead, only for Luka Milivojevic’s penalty ten minutes after the break to clinch a point for Roy Hodgson’s side, in turn keeping them two points clear of Newcastle in the Premier League table.
Thus, there have been many satisfied Magpies fans in the Tavern in the last few days, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Newcastle Chronicle, which suggests that Sunderland expressed an interest in forward Alex Gilliead during the January transfer window.
The 21-year-old came up through the youth ranks at St James’ Park but has yet to make a first team appearance for the North East giants, instead he has enjoyed loan stints at Carlisle United, Luton Town, and more recently Bradford City in a bid to kickstart his professional career.
And with 33 appearances for the Bantams this term, the forward appears to be heading in the right direction, and recent reports suggest that North East rivals Sunderland were interested in Gilliead during the January window.
And with his contract up at Newcastle in the summer, it remains to be seen whether the 21-year-old does indeed make the move across the North East come the end of the season.
Landlord’s verdict: Alex Gilliead has never made a senior appearance for Newcastle United, but has impressed in recent years on loan at Carlisle United, Luton Town, and most recently Bradford City.
The 21-year-old has made 33 appearances in all competitions for the Bantams this term and has clearly been doing something right, as the forward reportedly attracted interest from North East giants Sunderland during the January window.
No deal materialised in the end, but with Gilliead’s contract up at St James’ Park in the summer, the 21-year-old could well make the move across the North East come the end of the season.
