Newcastle United supporters have been pretty satisfied in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side produce a spirited display to draw 1-1 away at Crystal Palace on Sunday, thus moving them a point closer to Premier League safety.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Eagles off the back of drawing 1-1 with high-flying Burnley in midweek, yet looked on course to get back to winning ways in the league when Mo Diame gave the Magpies a first half lead. However, Roy Hodgson’s resurgent Palace equalised just ten minutes into the second period through captain Luka Milivojevic, meaning the North East giants had to settle for a share of the spoils for the third time in their last four Premier League encounters.
Consequently, there have been many satisfied Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from Sky Sports, which suggests that Aleksandar Mitrovic snubbed a move to North East rivals Middlesbrough on deadline day before joining fellow Championship side Fulham on loan for the rest of the season.
The 23-year-old struggled for regular football under Benitez in the first half of the campaign and looked destined to re-join ex-employers Anderlecht on a loan deal, only for the Belgian giants to pull out of a deal on deadline day.
And reports suggest that Tony Pulis’ Boro were keen on exploiting that misfortune by launching a loan move of their own for the Serbia international, only for the striker himself to reportedly turn them down in favour of Slavisa Jokanovic and his Fulham side, who sit six points and five places above Middlesbrough in the Championship table.
And while several of our resident Magpies fans were disappointed to see Mitrovic leave, with a World Cup to come in the summer and first team football likely to be restricted at Newcastle, it’s a move which appears to be in the best interests of the 23-year-old.
Landlord’s verdict: For all of Newcastle United’s goal-scoring woes this season, Aleksandar Mitrovic didn’t really get much of a chance under Rafa Benitez in the first half of the campaign.
The 23-year-old made just six Premier League appearances for the club before joining Championship side Fulham on loan for the remainder of the season, in what was a frantic deadline day for the striker given that former club Anderlecht pulled out of a loan deal for the Serbia international.
And recent reports suggest that Tony Pulis’ Middlesbrough were also keen on Mitrovic, only for the 23-year-old to reportedly turn down a move to Newcastle’s North East rivals and instead move down south to link up with compatriot Slavisa Jokanovic.
And while his departure hasn’t gone down too well with Newcastle fans, Mitrovic was unlikely to get the minutes needed under Benitez this term, and as such is a move he needed to make to keep his World Cup dreams alive.
