The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited by recent reports which claim Riyad Mahrez is edging closer to a move to the Etihad this summer, but they may be forced to accept that another youngster will depart following his arrival.
After impressing in the senior squad before moving on loan to Girona for two seasons, the Citizens faithful were disappointed by the news that Pablo Maffeo will join Stuggart this summer. The City fans propping up our bar were eager to see him continue his development in Manchester next season, but it seems Maffeo represents a quintessential example of the main purpose of the academy system in modern day football – especially for the top-four clubs.
However, City may not be finished with offloading youngsters just yet, as reports from the Leicester Mercury suggest that Brahim Diaz could become surplus to requirements this summer. According to the report, Leicester and Manchester City are in talks over the transfer of Riyad Mahrez, but discussions have hit a snag over agent fees.
Mahrez’s switch to City has appeared inevitable since his transfer saga dominated the headlines on January transfer deadline day at the beginning of the year, so it should only be a matter of time before an official announcement is made. If that notion eventually proves to be true, Diaz will find himself in a difficult position ahead of the new season with the added competition within the squad.
With the likes of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Bernardo Silva, David Silva and even his fellow academy star Phil Foden competing for places in attacking positions, Diaz will find it extremely difficult to enjoy any level of opportunity in the first-team.
In light of that realisation, Diaz could well be tempted to follow in Maffeo’s footsteps and join Girona on loan next season, or even complete a permanent transfer if a reasonable offer is forthcoming.
Naturally, Pep Guardiola will be eager to keep Diaz in Manchester where he can personally monitor and contribute to his development, but it’s only natural for a player to seek out first-team opportunities, so Mahrez’s arrival could force the 18-year-old wonderkid to consider a move away from the Etihad this summer.
