It’s been an up and down season for Liverpool fans, with the past week being a particularly difficult one to stomach. Supporters inside the Football Transfer Tavern are at a loss to explain the teams inconsistent form, and Matt Law of the Daily Mirror reckons Brendan Rodgers is set to axe five first team stars in the summer in a bid to improve the situation at Anfield.
First team players such as Pepe Reina, defenders Martin Skrtel and Jose Enrique, and midfielders Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing are all in danger of the axe.
Uruguayan centre back Sebastian Coates is also set to leave the club, whilst Rodgers will also look for a buyer for Andy Carroll who is currently on loan to West Ham United.
Add to this the fact Jamie Carragher is retiring, Rodgers looks set to have a massive rebuilding job on his hands.
An Anfield source reportedly said: “The manager has now imprinted his style of play on the club, but next season will be more important in terms of results.
“There are a lot of talented players at Liverpool, but the club needs people with strong mentalities who can perform under pressure.”
The defence is thought to be Rodgers priority, having invested in attacking talent during the January transfer window.
Martin Skrtel could be sold back to his former club Zenit St Petersburg in a £12 million deal, which would give Rodgers funds to launch a bid for his former Swansea City captain Ashley Williams.
Reina meanwhile is also set to leave Anfield after eight years of service, with his recent mistake at Manchester City further convincing Rodgers he needs to look for a new first choice stopper.
