Rooney’s Second Coming

Manchester United go into today’s game joint top of the Premiership, the only side still undefeated in all competitions. Just how this has happened, given the often abject, always lacklustre performances the team has put in so far this season, remains a bit of a mystery.

It can only be concluded that the league is wide open right now simply because none of the so-called top teams have shown any kind of form or consistency.

Last weekend saw Wayne Rooney return to Old Trafford; after all that went on, everyone was expecting an immediate impact and a complete turn-round in United’s display. It didn’t happen; the game against Wigan was, if anything, more dour than usual, and Rooney seemed to be just a little bit overwhelmed by it all, and was, understandably, a little off the pace having been out for so long.

Yet Wednesday night’s game against Glasgow Rangers changed all that. Once again, in a big game against better opponents, United looked eager to win and put in a show. When Rooney stood in the box, waiting to take that penalty, you could see every day of the last six months flash before his eyes in a heartbeat. He scored the goal, and laid the ghosts to rest. Now he’s back at Old Trafford with a score to settle.

Today, then, must surely be the moment when Ferguson’s men finally deliver a performance of genuine class; with Rooney now full of confidence and desperate to deliver, the fans can be hopeful of a dazzling display, and a demolition of the opposition.

Blackburn always present a physical, well-organised and disciplined challenge to United, but I can’t help feeling that today the reds would beat anybody put in front of them. Yes, players are still missing, but with no big game to worry about now until Arsenal’s visit on 13th December, United can concentrate completely on the task in hand today. Unfortunately for Blackburn, it promises to be a goal rush.

Well, it just has to be this time, doesn’t it..?

Prediction: 4-0, with Rooney to get a hat-trick.
