Former Real Madrid right back Michel Salgado is considering calling in a few favours with former team mate David Beckham, by asking him to join up with Salgado on loan at Blackburn Rovers, reports Zack Wilson at Goal.com.
Beckham, whose contentious loan move to Milan last season and decision to see out the season with the Italian side, rather than return to his club to begin the MLS season, saw him scorned by many upon his return to Los Angeles Galaxy, most notably by his outspoken American international team mate Landon Donovan. Despite this Beckham has intimated that he would again be keen on a loan move back to a top flight European side, with Milan again mooted as a likely destination. However Salgado, who spent several years playing down the right hand side for Real Madrid behind Beckham, is hoping that his friendship with the former England captain may persuade him to join up with Sam Allardyce’s men on loan. Salgado stated;
“He asked me if I had signed here at Blackburn Rovers for two years. I said I had signed and I live in Manchester in Alderley Edge. He said to me, ‘Oh, I have lived there, it is a fantastic place’.
“He said ‘Congratulations for going to Blackburn Rovers because it is a historic club. You have a great man as coach, Sam [Allardyce]’.
“I have to speak with him and the club [about a possible loan], but maybe we will have to pay him, all the players!”
“I will try!”
Salgado believes the arrival of Beckham at Ewood Park would have a beneficial effect on the teams chasing what he perceives as a top six elite of Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham and the Spaniard thinks that while Rovers didn’t enjoy a great season last year things could turn around for the club.
“We will try to make a better season than the last one. If we make a perfect season, maybe we are fighting for Europe.
“I think there is a big difference between the top six squads, like Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United, and maybe Tottenham. The rest of the squads I think can fight for the seventh position, I’m sure.”
“We are one of those squads.”
They certainly may well be if Beckham arrives to pull the strings elegantly in midfield, or is this just a Spanish pipedream for Rovers fans?
