Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson is understood to be keeping close tabs on West Ham midfielder Scott Parker as he looks to secure a replacement for the impending departure of Javier Mascherano from Anfield.
It has been reported that Parker is delaying signing a new 5 year deal at Upton Park as he waits to see if a second transfer bid will be made by Liverpool, who had an initial approach rejected earlier in the summer.
Despite signing Danish international Christian Poulsen from Juventus for around £4.5 million last week, Hodgson is looking to add some strength in depth to his squad, as he looks to improve on the clubs performance last season, with Parker seemingly the top of his current transfer wish list.
Current defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano has made his discontent known to the Liverpool hierarchy in recent months and, despite a committed performance against Arsenal in their season opener on Sunday, the Argentinean is looking for a move away from Merseyside citing family problems as the main reason he wishes to leave. Former Reds boss Rafa Benitez seems keep to bring the former West Ham player to Italy with Inter Milan, but as of yet no formal bid has been made.
Hodgson must make do with his current squad for the time being as they travel to Manchester City on Monday for a early Premier League test against a potential fourth place rival.
It will remain to be see whether speculation for a potential Parker transfer will become something more substantial but for the time being, if Javier Mascherano can put in the sort of performances he showed at the weekend, manager Hodgson will have no hesitations about putting him in the starting line up until a transfer away from the 18 time league champions is finalised.
