Maurizio Sarri has a problem on his hands. Chelsea aren’t playing well enough at present, and the manager will need to do something special if the Blues are going to have any chance of winning against Man City at the weekend.
Realistically, it’s going to be very tough for Chelsea, but there are a few decisions, at least in terms of personnel, that Sarri will have to make. If he gets them wrong, disaster could be on the horizon.
One such dilemma comes in the midfield, and after Chelsea’s loss against Wolves, it’s clear that Ruben Loftus-Cheek must start the game.
He’s made just 1 league start so far this season, but it’s evident that he’s exactly what Chelsea have been missing this year.
The Blues lack goals at present, with neither Alvaro Morata or Olivier Giroud delivering what they need. The simple fact is that Chelsea’s midfield needs to start delivering them, and that’s something that Loftus-Cheek has been brilliant at this season.
The Englishman has got 6 league goals this season, and though contentious, he was awarded Chelsea’s solitary goal against Wolves despite a clear deflection.
That’s more than both Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley combined, and that says all you need to know.
However, he shouldn’t just be in the team because of his goals. He’s also brilliant more broadly, offering great pace, dribbling and positivity in a midfield that has lacked a lot of that this year.
He doesn’t offer the defensive contribution that Kovacic does, but Chelsea were reliant on him over the weekend and they were reliant on him again on Wednesday. He’s simply got to start his second league game of the season.
