As one of our punters quips here at the Football Transfer Tavern it is becoming more and more frequent to hear that a mega-rich club have blown another side out of the water when it comes to bidding for a player and that is exactly what the Daily Mirror claim is about to happen to Arsenal.
The club have been tracking Barcelona stopper Victor Valdes and now face a major battle to land his services given that Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala are set to up the stakes somewhat dramatically. Of course this is the club who famously triggered Lionel Messi’s buy out clause before being told exactly where to go, and money is certainly not an object for the Dagestan-based side.
Now they have their eyes set firmly on Valdes and are willing to more than match the £12 million transfer fee Barcelona are demanding for the 31-year-old Spanish international who is refusing to pen a new deal at the Camp Nou. One thing that may well work in Arsene Wenger’s favour here is the desire the keeper holds to play in one of the top leagues in the world and despite all the money Russian clubs may now have, they cannot match the lure of the Premier League.
One other option Wenger could of course take is to go for Liverpool’s Pepe Reina who he has also been heavily linked to. Either way, things do not look so good for their current dropped number one Wojciech Szczesny and one would suspect his father has something to say about these latest rumours.
