The Southampton fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are still spilt over whether or not it was the right decision to sack manager Claude Puel after just one season in charge.
The Saints terminated to contract of the Frenchman after he led the club to an eight placed finish in the Premier League and their first major cup final in 14 years, however, his seemingly negative playing style meant the fans slowly turned against him after a sorry end to the season.
Puel’s side failed to score in their last five home games of the campaign, with only Sunderland scoring less goals at home all season long.
With the fans in the bar still not sure how they feel about the decision, Saints legend Mick Channon has lamented the board for their decision to sack the former Nice manager.
Well I don’t think he did a bad job,” Channon told the Daily Echo.
“I don’t know the politics of it. They never scored goals, they didn’t win games at the end of the year.
“They should have won the League Cup – if they had would they have sacked him?
“It wasn’t his fault Charlie Austin was injured for most of the season.
“Why sack someone if you’ve got no-one better? Personally I think they were wrong to sack him.”
As things stand, former Arsenal man Patrick Vieira is the favourite to take over from his compatriot Puel, with Frank de Boer and Mauricio Pellegrino also in the running, however, our landlord reckons that there are few managers out there available to the Saints who would be a big upgrade on Puel.
Southampton fans, we want to hear from you! Do you agree with Channon? Who should the club appoint? Let us know in the comments below…
