Punters in the Football Transfer Tavern understand just how many good players currently ply their trade in the Championship and one of the them has today been linked with a move to the Premier League as Mirror Football reports that Southampton are chasing Brighton winger Will Buckley.
Southampton boss Nigel Adkins will start bidding at £2 million to try to secure the impressive wide man as he seeks to strengthen his side ahead of the business end of the season.
The 24-year-old is highly rated in the Championship and was expected to make the step up in the near future although Brighton are expected to want a fee around £5m to open offers for Buckley.
Seagulls manager Gus Poyet and his side retain a chance of making the Championship play-offs and as a result are reluctant to sell their best players. Poyet said recently that it would take a ‘crazy’ offer to persuade him to let Buckley leave.
The Uruguayan added: “There are players who are not for sale but everybody has a price and people sometimes pay crazy money.”
Adkins has also been linked to Celtic striker Gary Hooper in recent weeks, who he managed while in charge of Scunthorpe, and Tottenham centre back Michael Dawson.
