The Southampton fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern once again find themselves in limbo with no real firm idea who is going to be taking over the reins at St. Mary’s after Frenchman Claude Puel was sacked.
The Saints have reportedly made it clear they want a new man in charge before the players return for fitness training on 29th June, and down could well be taking a huge step forward in making an appointment.
According to reports from ESPN, the south coast side are on the verge of holding talks with former Alaves boss Mauricio Pellegrino and could well announce him as Puel’s successor by the end of the week.
Should the Argentine come in to St. Mary’s, our landlord points out that he will have to meet top expectations to win the fans and board around.
Puel was axed after finishing eighth in the Premier League and reaching the club’s first major cup final in 14 years, despite battling with long-term injuries to key players as well as a failure to adequately replace the talent of Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle over the summer.
Saints fans, we want to hear from you! Do you know much about Pellegrino? Should you really be on the look out for a new manager or should Puel still be in charge? Let us know…
