Sanchez deal off: Man City should chase £12.6m-rated Serie A star to challenge Raheem Sterling

The mood amongst the Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern has dipped somewhat in recent days following their first Premier League defeat of the season.

Pep Guardiola’s City slickers finally tasted defeat at Anfield on Sunday after a run of 29 league matches without defeat which spanned back to the beginning of April 2017. Anfield has become something of a bogey ground for The Citizens in recent years, and Sunday certainly proved to be no exception as Liverpool stormed to a 4-3 victory in an enthralling encounter.

City have also suffered a huge setback away from the field this week, as Sky Sports confirmed that they have officially abandoned their pursuit of Alexis Sanchez due to concerns over the extortionate price of the deal.

The news arrived as a shock to the footballing world as months of speculation seemed to indicate a move to City was inevitable, but in a dramatic turn of events, it seems that Sanchez is set for a move to the red half of Manchester.

The resident Citizens propping up the bar in the tavern are naturally feeling disappointed to lose out on their primary target to a Premier League rival after such a lengthy pursuit, but they trust that their club have made the right decision.

Guardiola will now be looking across Europe to find an alternative to Sanchez, and he would be wise to consider Bologna’s high-flying winger Simone Verdi (valued at £12.6 million by Transfermarkt).

Verdi had been tipped to seal a transfer to Serie A league-leaders Napoli in recent weeks, but according to Calciomercarto, he has turned down a transfer due to concerns over first-team opportunities.

So far this season, Verdi has been one of Serie A’s standout performers on the right-side of Bologna’s attacking midfield three.

The Italian international boasts an impressive record of 6 goals and 5 assists from his 20 league appearances which suggests he could thrive in a higher quality side.

Raheem Sterling has been relatively unchallenged by Bernardo Silva for a place in Guardiola’s first-team this season, but Verdi’s presence in the squad could stimulate further improvement from City’s top scorer due to the increase in competition.

With that being said, Guardiola should attempt to lure Bolgona’s prize possession to The Etihad this month to bolster his midfield options and ensure that Sterling continues his brilliant form for the club.
