The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager to see the arrival of some quality talent at Old Trafford this month.
The transfer saga of Alexis Sanchez has been the hot-topic of the January window since the future of Philippe Coutinho was resolved earlier this month, and United’s interest in the Chile international has been a focal point of discussion in the British media. There is no doubt that Sanchez would improve the quality of any football team in the Premier League, but the fact Man City had pulled out of a potential deal should force Mourinho to give the deal a second thought.
The financial aspect of Sanchez’s deal represented a stumbling block for The Citizens despite their obvious power in the transfer market.
United’s interest certainly proves that the club can compete with their local-rivals away from the field, but if they want to reduce the gulf in class on the field they will need to alter their transfer strategy and abandon their pursuit of Sanchez.
At 29-years-old, Sanchez does not represent a player who could become an integral part of United’s long-term future, so Mourinho should instead make a shock move for Dele Alli (valued at £72 million by Transfermarkt) this month.
Tottenham Hotspur’s controversial attacking midfielder has been heavily criticised at times this season, despite the fact he has scored 9 and provided 11 assists from 29 fixtures in all-competitions – not bad for a player who is supposedly underachieving.
Mauricio Pochettino will certainly be determined to keep hold of one of his key players, but Daniel Levy’s history in the transfer market suggests that he could be tempted to offload the 21-year-old for the right price.
Although Alli will undoubtedly command a much higher fee than Sanchez, his potential for the future suggests he could become a club legend with the right guidance, so Mourinho must end his interest in Sanchez this month and do everything he can to tempt Tottenham into a sensational mid-season transfer.
