Sanchez signed: Now he must convince 18-year-old to agree terms with Tottenham

The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are delighted by the news that Davinson Sanchez has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a contract extension, and they are hoping that he will be the first of many to agree fresh terms this summer.

Tottenham look set to undergo a major upheaval this summer ahead of their move to the new stadium. As many as 5 players are expected to leave the club with the likes of Mousa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld being strongly linked with summer departures, but the supporters are naturally hoping the rumours prove to be nothing more than pure speculation.

However, with doubt surrounding a handful of key players and even Pochettino’s future at the club, some good news emerged for Spurs yesterday evening as the BBC confirmed that Davinson Sanchez has extended his contract with the club until 2024. Considering how quickly Sanchez has settled into life in English football at just 21-years-of-age, it’s fair to say that Spurs have made a very shrewd move to secure his long-term future prior to the World Cup where he is expected to feature for Colombia.

Now that Tottenham have secured the future of Sanchez, they should enter the transfer market in search of a new central defender who has the potential to replace Alderweireld this summer – based on the premise that the Belgium international will leave the club of course. With that in mind, Pochettino should consult Sanchez about getting in contact with his former Ajax teammate Matthijs de Ligt, as the 18-year-old defender looks destined to become a future star in European football.

De Ligt possesses a fantastic technical ability that is typical of an Ajax academy graduate along with a physical presence which would enable him to hold his own in the Premier League. The fact de Ligt has captained Ajax this season and already made 5 appearances for the Dutch national side serves to illuminate the huge strides he has made in his short career thus far, so he should have no qualms about moving to Spurs at such a young age.

Sanchez could prove to be an instrumental figure in a potential deal, as the pairing played alongside each other for the Dutch giants last season and even started the Europa League final against Manchester United. With Europe’s heavyweights circling to lure de Ligt away from Ajax, Spurs will struggle to win the race for his signature, but a few persuasive words from Sanchez might swing the 18-year-old’s decision in their favour this summer.
